In 2016, I was introduced to turmeric spice by an authentic Caribbean family from Jamaica. Parallel to their sharing of family love, there’s a shared expression throughout their home every Sunday — their love for curry chicken.

Turmeric is a flowering plant of the ginger family derived from the roots of Zingiberaceae. The popular spice has been used in India for (thousands) of years as a medicinal alternative that has continued to impact many health ailments today.  This yellow colored spice carries a mellow and authentic taste that is packed with iron, manganese, potassium, and Vitamin C.  Here’s my list why there’s power in turmeric and why it should be essential on your spice rack.

1. Say hello to curcumin.

Curcuminoids are compounds which are also known as curcumin.  Curcumin is the main ingredient in turmeric. This compound has many benefits like anti-inflammatory effects and is considered a strong antioxidant.  Two known studied compounds, bisdemethoxycurcumin and demethoxycurcumin, are essential for antioxidant and mineral and nutrient support.  The curcumin content in turmeric isn’t high. Curcumin is absorbed well paired with black pepper, containing piperine, a natural medium that increases in absorption of curcumin.

2. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory compounds.

Inflammation has its benefits against the natural body.  Inflammation aids in the body fighting bacteria. Oxidative damage includes free radicals that are highly reactive with unpaired electrons.  Curcumin in turmeric is an antioxidant that can block free radicals and boosts your body’s own activity of antioxidant enzymes.  According to Medical News Today, the antioxidants of turmeric are potent enough to protect your liver from damage by toxins.  Animal studies have shown curcumin’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are beneficial to relieving pain and slowing down the progression of osteoarthritis and anxiety.

4. Curcumin lowers the risk of heart disease.

Did you know heart disease is the number one cause of death in the world?  Did you know curcumin can help reverse steps in the heart disease process?  One of the essential benefits of curcumin in turmeric is improving the functionality of the lining of the blood vessels, also known as the endothelium. Endothelial dysfunction is a massive factor of heart disease. It includes the inability of the endothelial to control blood pressure and blood clotting.  Many studies state curcumin can improve endothelial function. Another study discovered curcumin and turmeric are just as effective as the prescription, Atorvastatin.

5. Turmeric can halt or treat cancer.
